STV Advertising Guide for Scottish Businesses | Elementary Spark

STV is Scotland's main commercial broadcaster, reaching millions of Scottish viewers every month across Glasgow, Edinburgh, Tayside and the north-east. To advertise on STV, a business books airtime — bought across the whole of Scotland as standard — to run a Clearcast-approved advert during STV programming, either as traditional linear spots or as targeted AdSmart placements aimed at specific households. This guide covers who STV reaches, the regions and formats available, the difference between linear and AdSmart, what it costs, and how the booking process actually works.

Why advertise on STV?

STV holds a position no UK-wide broadcaster can match in Scotland: it's the home of Scottish news, soaps and big entertainment, watched by a genuinely national Scottish audience. For a Scottish business, that means broadcast-level trust and reach concentrated entirely on the market you actually sell to — no budget wasted on viewers in the rest of the UK. TV remains one of the most trusted advertising environments there is, which is why even first-time advertisers see a credibility lift from appearing on STV.

Who STV reaches

STV covers almost all of mainland Scotland through its regional structure, including the Central Belt (Glasgow and Edinburgh), Tayside (Dundee and Perth) and the north-east (Aberdeen). When you buy STV airtime through a media agency, you generally buy all of Scotland in one go — the broadcaster sells it as a national-Scottish product rather than letting you cherry-pick single cities on linear.

Linear vs AdSmart: the two ways onto STV

Linear (traditional spots). Your ad runs in a commercial break during STV programming, seen by everyone watching in Scotland at that moment. Best for broad brand awareness and reaching a large Scottish audience quickly. Priced per slot, by time of day and programme popularity.

AdSmart (targeted). Different households watching the same programme can be shown different ads, selected by postcode, location, household type and more. You only pay when the ad is actually watched. Best for businesses that serve a specific area or customer type, and for smaller budgets — entry points are lower than a full linear burst. (We cover this in depth on our Sky AdSmart Scotland page.)

Many strong campaigns use both: AdSmart for precision, linear for scale.

STV formats

- 30-second spot — the standard, and what most rate-card pricing is quoted against.

- Shorter spots (10/20s) — cheaper per slot, good for tactical or reminder messaging.

- Sponsorship / idents — associating your brand with a programme or strand.

- STV Player (BVOD) — on-demand and streamed inventory, increasingly important as viewing shifts online.

What STV advertising costs

As a guide, a 30-second linear slot can range from around £200 off-peak to £2,000+ in peak evening programming, with your total driven by how many slots you run and over how long. A realistic first campaign — production plus a short airtime burst — often lands around £12,000–£15,000, though we'd usually advise planning a proper campaign rather than a one-off burst. AdSmart media spend can start from around £3,000. STV also offers a Growth Fund that can match-fund part of a campaign for eligible advertisers, lowering the cost of entry.

How OUR booking process works

1. Brief & strategy — who you want to reach, where, and what you want them to do.

2. Creative & production — concept, script, shoot or animation, voiceover, music, edit.

3. Clearcast clearance — every UK TV ad must be approved before it can air. Script first, then the finished ad. Allow time for this.

4. Media planning & buying — choosing linear, AdSmart or both; selecting slots and regions; negotiating the buy.

5. Delivery to air — the finished ad is delivered to broadcaster spec ahead of the air date.

6. On air & reporting — the campaign runs and performance is tracked.

With Elementary Spark all six steps happen under one roof — one team, one invoice, typically 3–4 weeks brief to air.

Frequently asked questions

We make it for you, end to end, including clearance. You can also bring existing footage if you have it.

How much does STV advertising cost?

Linear slots range from roughly £200 to £2,000+ each; AdSmart starts from around £3,000 in media spend. A first full campaign commonly sits around £12,000–£15,000 including production.

What's the STV Growth Fund?

A match-funding scheme that can contribute towards an eligible advertiser's campaign cost. Ask us whether you qualify.
